Koh Pha-ngan ( Pha-ngan Island )
Koh Pha-ngan ( Pha-ngan Island )
Blessed with some of Thailand’s most spectacular beaches and a still unspoiled interior, Koh Phangan is an ideal destination for those looking to party, relax, or engage in wellness programs, such as a yoga or meditation retreat.
Koh Phangan is a large island off the east coast of Surat Thani province in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Phangan is located about 100 km off shore and about 15 km north of Koh Samui. Most well known for its monthly full moon party, Koh Phangan features some of the most spectacular beaches in Thailand, most of which are still only moderately developed, providing visitors with easy access to either a wild beach party or a relaxing and quiet beach holiday. While Koh Phangan was once the exclusive domain of backpackers who wished to escape the more commercially developed Koh Samui, there are now resorts that cater to all travelers, from honeymooners to families with children. That said, there are still many resorts that embody the hippie spirit of Koh Phangan’s “founders” and draw numerous budget backpackers looking to get away from it all, study meditation or yoga, or engage in other holistic, Ayurvedic or health oriented programs.
Located in the Gulf of Thailand a short boat ride from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan (pronounced pun-ngun) is a large, mountainous island covered with coconut trees and surrounded by white sand beaches and aquamarine waters. While each month thousands of young people flock to the world famous Full Moon Party in Haad Rin, where local and international DJs play music on the beach, there are dozens of other beaches in varying stages of development that are alternatively occupied by five-star beach resorts, budget beach bungalows, and a number of yoga, meditation, and health retreats.

Beaches and Bays at Koh Pangan.
Located at the SE point of the island you find two beaches, Haad Rin sunset and Haad Rin Sunrise. Both these beaches are beautiful with fine white sand, crystal clear waters and a jungle backdrop. Haad Rin sunset is the quieter beach with shallow corals with Haad Rin sunrise being the more beautiful with many restaurants and bars. Here the monthly full moon party takes place.
This beach offers great views of the sunset over the long stretches of white sands running from Thong Sala down to Baan Khai.
Said to be one if the prettiest beaches on Koh Phangan with stretches of white sand and a good drop of for swimming. Both ends of the beach have good corals off the rocks. If you are looking for a postcard view this is the beach for you.
Swimming here is only available in the high tidal season of Nov to Apr. This isolated beach is courser with a reef which is in swimming distance.
●Thong Nai Pan
Only accessible by a jungle road or by boat, a double crescent bay with a gently sloping beach surrounded by swaying palms. This very laid back beach attracts many families as the beach is perfect for young children.
When the tides are high in Dec to Mar Chaloklum provides good swimming in many parts of its two and a half Km beach. Beautiful stretches of beach can be found on either side of Ao Chaloklum.
A beautiful and secluded beach known by the Thai’s as an old place for pirates who came here to hide out until their ships were full of booty until moving off to trade. In the high tidal season of Nov to Apr Haad Salad provides good swimming and a reef of 150 metres just offshore.
●Mae Haad Beach & Koh Ma
Located on the NE tip of the island lies a tiny island of Koh Ma, just across from the beach at Mae Haad. In low tide a sand barconnects the both. The months between Dec and Mar are the best times to visit as the rest of the year the tides are to low for swimming. Mae Haad provides a long stretch of beach with views of sunsets over Koh Ma.
●Haad Khuat (Bottle Beach)
Only accessible by boat or trekking through the jungle trail this fine white sandy beach is perfect for people who wan to get away from it all. Enclosed by granite rocks making it great for swimming and snorkeling, a beach popular by families with small children. Just be wary of the weather, as the boats can only travel in good weather.
